Retrofitting school buses: safety, decarbonization and circular economy with RETROFLEET
“In January 2026, ANATEEP published an interview with Emmanuel Flahaut, CEO of RETROFLEET, on the electric retrofit of school buses: a key solution to combine decarbonization, safety and circular economy.”
Context and mission of RETROFLEET
Founded in 2020 by Emmanuel Flahaut, RETROFLEET specializes in the electric retrofitting of coaches, particularly those used for school transport and intercity routes. The company converts internal combustion engine vehicles into electric vehicles, capitalizing on their robustness and low daily mileage. These coaches, designed to cover up to 1 million kilometers, are often in excellent condition after 10 years of service, making them ideal candidates for retrofitting.
Environmental benefits
Retrofitting reduces the carbon footprint by 37% compared to buying a new electric vehicle, and by up to 87% compared to maintaining a diesel vehicle. Retrofitted coaches emit zero CO₂ and local pollutants (NOx, particulate matter), thus improving air quality around schools and reducing noise pollution. ADEME confirms these significant environmental benefits.
Security and innovation
RETROFLEET incorporates advanced safety features for its batteries (LFP chemistry, temperature sensors, electronic management) and collaborates with the Savoie Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS 74) to guarantee optimal safety. The batteries are monitored in real time, with immediate alerts in case of any anomaly. The chosen LFP chemistry is renowned for its stability and resistance to shock and overheating.
Sustainability and compliance
Components not replaced (chassis, upholstery) are inspected and refurbished to ensure an extended lifespan (up to 15 years). RETROFLEET works closely with the authorities to comply with safety and homologation standards, identical to those for new vehicles. The company is also committed to international retrofit regulations through the European association for the sector.
PROSPECTS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Retrofitting aligns with the principles of a circular economy, preventing the waste of still-functional vehicles. RETROFLEET advocates for these issues to be considered in public tenders, in order to accelerate the decarbonization of school transport.
